Top 4 Dumbest Fashion Statements Made By College Girls

I don't know the first thing about fashion. I have two outfits: Office Environment, which is something that is not jeans mixed with something that is not a "BAY AREA POETRY SLAM 2006" t-shirt, and All Other Environments, which is a combination of any of the myriad of articles of clothing I own, most of which are acrylic blends and most of which I accumulated during my two years of indentured minimum wage servitude at Forever 21. But in spite of my naivete, I am totally equipped and entitled to judge the fashion decisions of others.

4. Plaid work shirts. Ladies, just because we might have made great strides in achieving employment equality doesn't mean we have to dress in a way that serves as a constant reminder that we too can be lumberjacks and factory workers. It is not, in fact, cute (nor is it ironic) to wear a big plaid shirt with tiny little jeans and some gaudy gold pendant that is probably, if my memory of days of sorting through hundreds of tangled necklaces at Forever 21 is correct, like, owls and elephants and shit. You look utterly ridiculous.

3. Leggings as pants.

I must admit. Yesterday, I walked in the rain and muck to my boyfriend's place wearing purple leggings and a Hanes undershirt. But this was not a #4 Dumbest Fashion Statement, because I was so blatantly scrubbin' it. If it is Sunday and raining and a holiday weekend, and your hair is natty and all you want to do is finish your homework and watch plastic surgery shows on TLC, then it is acceptable to wear leggings. Be that as it may, they are not an attractive look on anyone except the borderline emaciated. Why would you abandon the potential to wear something that has a cool silhouette for something that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. Leggings are gross and should be reserved for dancers and grade-schoolers, not 19 year old girls with asymmetrical haircuts and cowboy boots.

2. The Keffiyah.

In addition to looking sloppy and generally unkempt, it's kind of racist and really stupid. Maybe, maybe this is appropriate if you are a well-informed Palestine supporter who does not wear their scarf with the same smug arrogance as so many hipsters, but for the most part these are being worn by people who are at the very most only vaguely aware that the trend originated somewhere in the Middle East before it came to Urban Outfitters.

1. Hideous glasses

Ugh! To read, my mom sometimes had to wear these absurd thick rimmed glasses that she had left over from being a grad student in the 80s and I used to make fun of her for it. Now identical glasses are popping up on the delicate little faces of my peers. This is the female equivalent of men's Kanye West "shade" glasses, only even dumber and more hideous. And don't even give me any of that "they're prescription I need them!" shit-- if you need glasses then get normal glasses or contacts like every other civilized person. Not only is this heinous, but wearing them isn't even cool or ironic anymore. So the only potential benefit your absurd glasses could have reaped is nullified. Get out.

We had a debate over the Keffiyah in french one day when you weren't there. Max was wearing one and Sydney was like "I can't believe you're wearing that, it means you support Palestinians." And he was like "So? What's wrong with that?" And Sydney said "You support terrorism?" And I interjected saying that I was an Arab and I hate that people suggest that Arabs are always terrorists.

It was awkward.

I was about to write a post now on leggings - because I really think women look terrible wearing them - and bamm, I found your post.
Thank you for writing this.
I completely agree with all you wrote.
Some people wear whatever they see for sale or on fashion shows or, even worst, stand up for a cause and don't even know what this cause means, just for "fashion". Maybe they should read more.

Was I too much? Sorry.

I really think that the person who wrote this blog has absolutely no style sense, has difficulty following trends or maybe just doesnt know how to. The hideous glasses thing, i totally understand, but the leggings, what the hell? Do you not watch runway shows? all the major designers even used them! Even in the picture you posted, all the girls looked fabulous. I mean you're entitled to your opinion, but don't complain, cuz no one is asking YOU to wear these items. Dont be a hater!!

I love this. I just arrived to college and completely agree, the plaid isn't as bad here though. This school is more along the lines of shitty sorority shirt, leggings (with NOTHING over them) and you guessed it! UGG(ly) boots. It is very disappointing

You're right, you DON'T know the first thing about fashion. The girls in that picture wearing leggings look amazing...I think someone is jealous. You have ZERO rights to talk about any item of clothing whatsoever, as you have ZERO style. It's true, fat people like you shouldn't wear leggings, but don't mock them just because you can't say no to pizza.

I agree you have no sense of style. i would love to see how you dress because i know for a fact i'd be laughing my ass off.

No, this post was fucking amazing. My boyfriend actually wears a Keffiyah and I personally think it's cute on him (but he's cute anyway, so...) But I have this group of acquaintences who have to be the most arrogant, pretentious, trendy fucking pieces of shit in the world. Recently, via Facebook photos, I see them all sharing this heinous pair of reading glasses. I laughed out loud. I don't know if they think they're so fucking gorgeous that they make those terrible glasses look good, but they fucking don't. And also, I was in UO a few weeks ago and saw those lumberjack shirts (they have them at Pacsun, too) and I was like, "What. The. Fuck. What the fuck are these? Who would wear these?" As for leggings, I'll admit that I tried wearing them plain with just a striped turtleneck (think Edie or Audrey), but even on my small frame, they looked too revealing. They're like going out wearing nothing but black pantyhose! And pantyhose are fucking gross.

I think this whole debate, and this kind of debate, is really really interesting. Like other people said, obviously you're entitled to your opinion about this fashion, and I think it's kind of great that there are very distinct camps of people a) who wear the fashion and don't know/care about the controversy, b) people who wear it consciously because they don't care, and c) people who condemn it all.

I guess the thing to remember is that, whether or not a select few consider it fashion or not, it's getting worn, time is passing, and the trends will evolve and change into new ridiculous things to look back on. History is awesome.

How can leggings be too revealing? Isn't NOT wearing them even more revealing? I'm not saying no pants, but if it's a dress, then leggings leave more to the imagination than bare legs. Just saying..
All of these "fashion statements" have obviously become extremely popular so it's common to see a lot of them (not just on college girls). You might as well get used to it.
I'm sure when big glasses used to be the only glasses a long time ago, but people started wearing smaller glasses for fashion, everyone was saying the same exact thing. What's the point in making them so small just to look cool?
Just like you said, trends come and go. These trends will all eventually go and unless you surround yourself with sorority girls, you shouldn't be that sick of them.

The way you dress may or may not support terrorism? Arabs are terrorists? Hahahaha.

"terrorism" IS a bad thing, but not the idea of "terrorism" that the *politically correct* americans want to promote. If you read some history books you may realise that americans are the REAL terrorists of the planet.

I don't know why u hate them, but i think they are great....yea its revealing, but I plan 2 wear a long top that covers my bum!

yeah. you don't seem to be very daring/experimental when it comes to style.

I don't enjoy looking like a dumbass, especially when looking like a dumbass is less my own innovation and more mainstream trendy, so I guess you're right.

Ha-ha this has made me laugh, you are right on the money on all of these trends.

NEVER wear leggings with heels. It looks really stupid and cheap. If you are going to wear tights (leggings) wear them with a flat shoe and shirt that is long in the body, do not go out in public in tights and a singlet unless you are about to go do some form of exercise . If you want to cover your legs, wear full length opaque stockings under your dress as they do not cut your leg off at the ankle making you legs appear shorter.

Leggings are fine as pants and they are very comfortable. It’s time that we ALL wear leggings. Get over the fashionista and body image constraints and just wear them. You know you want to, you know they'll be more comfortable than the constrictive clothes you wear now. Go for it. Enjoy the fit, feel and look of leggings - just wear them. Everyone looks good in leggings and some look great. Choose a well made pair - not with cotton fibers that bag out over time but a high tech fiber that retains its shape. Go for the comfort and support. Leggings that go to the ankle have a greater positive visual aesthetic than capri style that chop the leg. Plus the full length leggings support you from your ankle to your waist and give you an energetic lift. Laugh, Live, Love & Enjoy! Check out www.UnJeans.com

I don't know why I'm bothering to comment here, but I really do like leggings. They're simple, they reveal the unique shape of your legs, and to me, they look good on young women of most sizes, from very skinny to slightly overweight. Wearing a top long enough to cover the butt (most of it, anyway) is probably advisable in most situations, though.
