on God, or something

This from a lengthy letter my mom wrote to me just a little over a year ago (with, of course, all the highly personal stuff edited out for entire-internet-universe-appropriateness), and I realized today that it perfectly sums up my own theological philosophy, and I think it's worth sharing:

"God- I have no perfectly developed theory of the afterlife to share with you here-- which is a shame and a seeming waste of 13 years of Catholic and Jesuit education. But then again, maybe not: I have a deeply held belief in God. I don't for a minute believe that God gave me cancer or made this particularly crappy stuff happen. It happened because sometimes cells just do this. It's science, not religion. I believe there is a God and that he hears us when we pray...but I don't believe God can be relied upon to intervene and keep crap from happening. God can however help give us the strength to get through the crap. Why the system works this way is unclear to me. But I believe in God and in some existence beyond this world."

Goddamn, someone really needs to STOP THIS SHIT.
A couple months ago my school's young republicans group held a diaper drive for one of these centers, and it was very good PR, the giant picture of them above the fold front page on the school paper, surrounded by boxes of Pampers.
I just really have no tolerance for the distribution of misinformation. No one should be manipulating you when it comes to what you do with your body.

And on that note, it's time to go to work aka Planned Parenthood NYC.
